The Dunaj department store, a national cultural monument in the Slovak capital, will undergo a major renovation.
Located in the heart of Bratislava, Dunaj first opened its doors to shoppers in 1936, as the first modern department store in Slovakia and was originally called Bohuslav and Brouk. In the 1980s, due to the popularity and large clientele, a second building was built and connected directly to the main building and was called “the House of Clothing”.
However, in the 1990s, due to the arrival of fashion brands from Western Europe, the department store started to lose its influence, and since then the space has not been used for its original purpose but became an office space property.
Still, the department store has since remained an iconic landmark of Bratislava, recognized by every local. Additionally, it has received revived popularity due to the popular Slovak television series titled “Dunaj: K Vašim službám” (Dunaj: At Your Service), which is set in the department store. Therefore, it’s only fitting that Dunaj will finally see itself being restored to its former glory after so many years. The renovation will be undertaken by CTP, the largest commercial real estate developer in the CEE region, and is meant to become home to new cafes, restaurants, offices, and apartments whilst also serving its original purpose as a shopping space.
